2.1 This Standard establishes a multi-criteria framework for evaluating the circularity on the basis of durability, recyclability, reusability, and recoverability for medium and large, secondary (rechargeable) batteries. The Standard covers the battery cells, battery pack, and battery management system. Intended uses for the batteries covered in this Standard include:
a) Electric vehicle (EV) batteries;
b) Industrial batteries; such as those used for renewable energy storage;
c) Batteries for light means of transport; such as e-bikes, electric scooters, and golf carts; and
d) Emergency power backups.
2.2 This Standard covers the evaluation, design, material selection, supply chain management, manufacturing and operations, packaging, marking, energy use, end-of-life management, and corporate practices of batteries.
2.3 This Standard does not cover:
a) Primary (non-rechargeable) batteries;
b) portable batteries used in applications including such as cell phones, flashlights, cameras, e-cigarettes, appliances (including handheld power tools and outdoor power equipment) and laptops; or
c) Lead-acid type batteries.
2.4 This Standard shall not cover topics not associated with circularity, including, but not limited to:
a) Product safety; and
b) Restriction of substances in the environment and transportation already covered by applicable U.S. regulations.
