031150-000000-0000001 Scope
1.1 The scope of this Outline is for AI-based products which may be software products with AI-based functions or components. Examples include an AI-based fault detection function for machinery, an AI-based functional safety function for a circuit breaker, an AI-based setpoint control module of HVAC system, an AI-based object recognition function in a video camera, or a Large Language Model (LLM) based customer service chatbot.
1.2 There are two categories of AI-based products. The first category includes products that are solely comprised of AI-based functions, such as an LLM-based service recommendation chatbot. The second category encompasses products that integrate one or more AI-based functions in addition to other possible non-AI-based functions, such as an HVAC system with an AI-based setpoint controller or a video camera with AI-based object recognition capabilities. This Outline encompasses both categories of AI-based products. However, products that have safety functions but do not incorporate AI-based functions are not covered within the scope of this Outline. The Outline is intended to specify horizontal set of requirements for various AI-based products and is intended be used in conjunction with other existing (vertical) end-product safety standards.
1.3 Not all the requirements specified in this document apply to every AI-based product. Depending on the particular AI application or product, only a subset of these requirements may be relevant.

1.6 The requirements in this Outline address safety risk associated with using AI-based capabilities and functions of AI-based products. Safety considerations of non-AI based capabilities and functions of the products are not in the scope of this Outline and are to be addressed by the applicable safety standards of those products.
