01441a-000000-0000001 Scope
1.1 These requirements cover woven, braided, knitted, expandable, shrinkable, spiral wrap, or polymeric sleeving intended for the management of systems in electrical installations, such as securing, covering, harnesses, or additional protection to bundles of wires, cables, and the like.
1.2 Sleeving is installed as outer covering for conductors, cords, cables, tubing, and similar.
1.3 Sleeving may be installed in specific conditions and exposures of the intended use, i.e. flammability, oil, sunlight. The final acceptance is dependent upon its use in complete equipment that conforms with the standards applicable to such equipment.
1.4 Sleeving is intended to be installed over insulated conductors and does not provide electrical insulation due to the openings inherent in the weave construction of the sleeving fabric.
1.5 Sleeving may be employed in equipment where it is not subjected to repeated flexing or severe mechanical stress.
1.6 These requirements do not apply to coated or impregnated electrical sleeving, extruded tubing with reinforcement, extruded insulating (electrical) tubing, or tubing intended only for mechanical protection, since they are covered by other requirements that is intended for use in equipment designed to be installed and used in accordance with the rules of NFPA 70®, National Electrical Code® (NEC®).
Note 1: Coated Sleeving is covered in the Standard for Coated Electrical Sleeving, UL 1441.
Note 2: Extruded Electrical Tubing is covered in the Standard for Extruded Insulating Tubing, UL 224.
Note 3: Mechanical Protection Tubing (MPT) is covered in the Standard for Mechanical Protection Tubing (MPT) and Fittings, UL 1696.
