Subject 153

Bulletin Dated: July 1, 2005

SUMMARY OF TOPICS

The following changes in requirements are being proposed:

1. Proposal to revise the scope to delete the exclusion of hand lamps from the standard and to exclude illuminated decorative furnishings

2. Addition of an Exception for metal thickness that complies with the equivalency test for cast metal found in UL 1598

3. Addition of an Exception for enclosure openings for units with HID ballasts that comply with burnout test requirements of UL 1029

4. Addition of an Exception for attachment plugs with pin-type terminals that allows them to be shipped unattached when installation instructions are included

5. Proposal to delete the word "natural" from the term "natural gray" when describing the color of a grounded conductor

6. Proposed new requirements for separation of communication circuit conductors from line circuits

7. Proposed new requirements that restrict the maximum ampere rating of a portable luminaire to 12 A for a unit provided with an attachment plug with a 15 ampere, 125 volt configuration

8. Proposed new requirements for connectors that provide construction and performance levels equivalent to components evaluated to UL 498 or UL 817

9. Addition of an Exception that permits a switch on the load side of a ballast

10. Editorial correction of the heading in Table 47.1 to reflect accurate measurement indicators

11. Proposal to add a reference to allow switches to be evaluated to UL 61058 in addition to UL 1054

12. Proposed revision to grounding requirements for fluorescent units that clarifies the requirements for ballasts having open circuit voltage in excess of 150 volts

13. Clarification of normal temperature test to allow compact fluorescent lamps with class P ballasts to be temperature test exempt

14. Proposal to clarify the securement of power supply cords for clamp-on luminaires only applies to incandescent units

15. Deletion of 15A minimum rating for plug and receptacle used in portable cabinet lights

16. Proposed new requirements for portable cabinet light accessories

17. Proposed revisions that differentiate between kits and subassemblies, and require kits to be completely wired as required elsewhere in the Standard. Subassemblies that require wiring by the user would have instructions that this product is to be installed by a qualified electrician only

18. Proposed revision to eliminate the maximum mounting stake length

19. Proposed revision of Table to reflect commonly available lamps

20. Proposed revision to strain relief test to indicate that the strain is to be applied in a direction that is worst case

21. Correction of low voltage hinged or movable part temperature rise during the cycling test to match the previous Edition of UL 153

22. Proposed revision to add a performance option to assembly requirements for 1/2 inch minimum diameter of tubing to demonstrate that smaller diameter tubing could be used without placing any stress on the conductors

23. Addition of an Exception that provides alternate UV filter requirements using the limits and test procedures from the ANSI/IESNA RP-27 Series Standards

24. Proposed Exception to the requirements for switches that allows additional lampholder and marking options for tungsten halogen units using double-ended lamps

25. Proposed revision for tungsten halogen units to include the shade as a removable part

26. Addition of spacer and projection requirements to the tungsten-halogen lamp guard, lamp containment barrier, and UV filter security test

27. Proposed new and revised requirements for tungsten halogen lamps to align the standard to similar requirements in UL 1598 and to identify lamps that are suitable for use in open luminaires

28. Proposed revision to tungsten-halogen safety instructions to clarify that they only apply to lamps that require a guard, lamp containment barrier, or UV filter

29. Proposal to add additional examples of tungsten-halogen lamps restricted to low voltage use and to align the requirement with those in UL 1598
